How Chinese mobile number prefixes work

What the first 7 digits mean, and what region lookup can and cannot tell you.

Mainland mobile numbers are 11 digits; the first 7 form a prefix used to locate the issuing province/city and carrier.

Those 7 digits alone are enough for a lookup; a full number is queried the same way.

The region is where the number was issued — not current residence, and not proof of identity.

Newer prefixes may be missing until the database is updated.
