PNG vs JPG: Which Format Should You Use?

PNG vs JPG: when to keep transparency and lossless quality, and when to switch to smaller JPGs for photos.

PNG is lossless and supports transparency — best for logos, screenshots, icons and graphics with sharp edges.

JPG is lossy and much smaller, ideal for photos and gradients where slight quality loss is invisible.

JPG has no transparency; if your image has a transparent background, converting to JPG fills it with white.

Rule of thumb: use PNG for graphics/text, JPG for photos; switch photos to JPG when size matters.
